UP Diliman Month 2014

The following is a rundown of the main activities sponsored by the UPD Office of the Chancellor through the UPD Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA) in celebration of the UP Diliman Month 2014.

*All concerts were presented in honor of those affected by the recent calamities and in gratitude to the countless relief workers and donors. Cash and cheque donations were accepted during these fundraising events.

Ikotoki Para Exhibit

27-28 February and 1 March


A project of the UP CoNeMus, various installations around the campus will include music with sound art installations (Music-Fine Arts), frog and bird species sound and locations (Music-Biology), sound markers (Music-Asian Center), and music technology (Music-Engineering).


Ikotoki Para is the exhibit component of Prof. Christine Muyco's Ikotoki Project. Ikotoki Para is about audio archiving the UP Diliman Campus and presenting it as an inspiration for young composers to produce new works. Environment sound recording were assigned to students of College of Arts and Letters (Art Studies), College of Science (Zoology), College of Engineering (EEE) and others. The final output can be experienced on selected waiting sheds along the Ikot route that will serve as exhibition venue. It would either be on listening stations or sound producing installations. An online gallery will contain all raw files, the compositions, information and interactive activities for audience. Participating artists are Minich Cruz, Prime Felias, Feliz Ann Macahiz, Jordan Peralta, Jam Respicio, Patricia Rodriguez, Jairus Saldejeno, Karl San Jose and Nicanor Valdez. Part of the IkoToki project of the UP Composers of New Music (CoNeMus), which merges the disciplines of music, biology, fine arts, engineering and Asian studies in highlighting the sounds around the UP campus.

A gathering of the University’s accomplished artists (students, faculty, alumni and staff) for a day of sketching sessions. Produced artworks will be on sale and proceeds will be for the benefit of those affected by the recent calamities.

The 14th installment of the UP Streetdance Club's annual concert. This year's concert will showcase the Club' s artistic capabilities, venturing out from their own styles to various genres of dance.

Himigsikan is UPD’s traditional open air concert held every Sunday of February at 5:00 p.m. This year, home-grown students-musicians will perform at the Carillon Plaza. UPD’s own radio station, UP-FM and the UP Kontra-GaPi will be co-presenting.

February 2 CAMERATA JAZZ
Vibrant jazz performances by musicians Gilbert Asuque (drums), Joey de Guzman (saxophone), Jaimar Palispis (vibraphone), Miko Villena (bass), Erwin Fajardo (keyboard) and Phoebe Bitoon (vocals).

February 9 UP TUGMA (Tugtugang Musika Asyatika)
Musical presentations featuring traditional Asian instruments: Chinese sizhu, Korean samulnori, Javanese gamelan, Indian raga, Mindanao kulintangan and Japanese koto. 

February 16 MAROON BENCH JAM
Co-presented with UP-FM featuring student bands Ourselves the Elves, Idioms & Dispositions and Maxine Jarantilla.

February 23 KA-FU (Katutubo Fusion)
The culminating performance of various student musical groups who participated in the month-long workshop of the same title organized by the UP Kontra-GaPi. Ka-Fu or Katutubo Fusion is the concept of creating new music by incorporating indigenous sounds and instruments to other musical styles.

An original musical with libretto written by professor emeritus Fides Cuyugan Asencio, music composed by Raymond and Jeannelle Roldan, and directed by of Prof. Alegria Ferrer.  This retelling of the well-loved Filipino legend of Maria Makiling will bring inspiration to the audience regarding its message of wildlife conservation and environmental preservation.
