UP Diliman Arts and Culture Month 2019

In commemoration of the UP Diliman Arts and Culture Month 2019, the Office of the Chancellor, through the UPD Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA), presented various activities to promote the invaluable cultural resources and artistic offerings of the University as we contemplate on its history and our community’s sense of place.

The occasion, titled “UP Diliman Arts arts and Culture Month 2019: Lakad-Gunita sa Lupang  Hinirang” also marked the 70th year of the University’s  move from its original site in Manila to Diliman. The various activities presented UP as a communal portrait with many stories to tell of local narratives and institutional histories, endowed with many acts of place-making.

Himigsikan is an open-air concert that takes place every Diliman Month - a relaxing treat for the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and residents. This year will feature the band, Freestyle.

Lakad-Gunita Walking Tours

Anchored on the concept of public engagement, the aesthetics of experience, and the theme Lakad-Gunita, walking tours around the UP Diliman campus are designed and managed by the Asian lnstitute of Tourism with the aim of engaging the students and the public on the rich history and environment of UP Diliman. Here are the following tour packages and their schedules:

  • DILIAIAN FAUNA - Mondays, 6:00 am to 9:00 am
  • MARTIAL LAW REVISITED - Tuesdays, 8:30 am to 11:30 am 

 Tuesdays, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

  • PUBLIC ART AND ARCHITECTURE - Wednesdays, 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm
  • DILIMAN FLORA - Thursdays, 8:30 am to 11:00am 
  • HISTORICAL BUILDINGS - Fridays, 2:30 pm to 5:15 pm

In coordinatioIn cooperation with the College of Mass Communication, selected films centered around the themes of displacement and emplacement in various contexts will be screened at the Cine Adarna, UP Film Institute.

Nana Rosa: Remembering as an Act of Courage

In coordination with UP Playwrights’ Theatres of the College of Arts and Letters, Nana Rosa, a play by Rody Vera and directed by Jose Estrella explores the story of Rosa Henson, the first Filipino to publicly come out as a comfort woman in 1992. The play explores the theme of displacement- both physical and psychological- and how the human spirit struggles and survives amid horrific conditions.

Pagpunla at Pag-ani: A National Conference to Commemorate 70 Years of UP Diliman

This national conference to commemorate 70 years of UP Diliman is spearheaded by the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. It gathers some of the renowned academics of UP Diliman, including the following luminaries: historian Reynaldo IIeto, National Artist Ramon Santos, Professor Emeritus Randy David, Professor Ricardo Jose, and Professor Belen Medina. The concept of place and history is explored in the conference to reverberate to local, national, and global issues.

Through a combination of archival research, oral history methods, installation art, and video documentation, the exhibit explores the contextual understanding of the relationship of history, people, site, structures, sound, and material culture, serving as the basis of understanding UP Diliman as an active heritage site.

The opening program is a commemoration of the 70th year of the University’s move from Manila to the Diliman campus through a creative performance. The program showcases among other performances, a choreographic piece that mould stylistically and ritually re-enact the transfer of the UP Oblation on February 11, 1949. Featured artists are Becky Abraham, Lester Demetillo, Rody Vera, Upeng Fernandez, and BLKD. The UP Symphonic Band, with the UP Concert Chorus, UP Cherubim and Seraphim, UP Chorale Class, and the UP Manila Chorale will perform a new composition by National Artist Ramon Santos
