UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2021

5 Abril - 31 Agosto
UP Film Institute

Scripts in Asia, c. 1500–2000 (An International Conference via Zoom)

27-28 April | 8AM-5PM

Learn more

The European arrival in Asia in the 16th century was a turning point not only in the political trajectories but also in the writing traditions of Asian states and societies. In maritime Southeast Asia for instance, indigenous literacy in Indic-derived scripts was long widespread in societies such as the Batak (si-sia-sia script), Tagalog (baybayin) and Bugis (lontara). However, increasing European influence occurring alongside Islamization engendered the transition to Latin or Jawi (Arabic-derived) scripts. This conference intends to explore the impact of European presence in the various writing traditions of Asia. In what ways were certain languages and especially scripts privileged by colonial states? How is the transition from one writing script to the other reflected in the sources? How do postcolonial societies across Asia view or instrumentalize their varied epigraphical, textual, and codicological traditions?

Sabang: Early Southeast Asian-European Intercultural Encounters (An International Online Conference)

18 - 20 March

Learn More

The Philippines’ entanglement with Hispanic and Hispanicized cultures from the sixteenth century facilitated the flow and exchange of goods and ideas to and from Asia, on the one hand and the Americas and Europe, on the other. The Philippines, Manila in particular, played a crucial role not only as an important trans-shipment point for American silver, Chinese porcelain, textiles, and other products, but also as a melting pot of cultures. The 500th anniversary of Philippine-Spanish encounter provides an opportune moment to analyze and reflect on the vaunted yet largely understudied intercultural encounters between Europe and Asia.

The UP Asian Center intends to hold a three-day webinar conference entitled “Sabang: Early Southeast Asian-European Intercultural Encounters” to discuss the varied cultural legacies of the European-Asian encounter. “Sabang” (meaning juncture of bodies of water in Visayan and several other Philippine languages) encapsulates the meeting of cultures and the centrality of the Philippines in these encounters. While the conference’s inspiration draws primarily from the Philippine-Spanish experience, it also seeks presentations on and from neighboring Southeast Asian countries to highlight similarities and differences with the Philippine experience. It likewise seeks presentations that employ inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches to understand cultural exchange and hybridity. “Sabang” envisions a lively online exchange of ideas by both young and senior scholars from Asia, the Americas, and Europe. It intends to have several modalities of exchange namely roundtable discussions, keynote lectures, and panel presentations.

PAGDIRIWANG 2: Christianity and Popular Devotions—An Online International Conference on Folklore and Heritage

It is a celebration and a conversation about faith that has been localized and contextualized through intimate and collective acts of devotions. The conference will focus on the transformations and incorporation of Christianity and popular devotion in the cultural and social lives of local populations. Academics from the Philippines and other countries who have conducted research on the topic were invited to present in the conference.

Convened by the UP Diliman Department of Anthropology, this one-day conference will feature critical discussions on cultural developments pertinent to the introduction and practice of Christianity in the Philippines. Panel presentations will offer critical perspectives on theories explaining ‘Philippine culture’ (e.g. syncretic) with evidence coming from studies relating to different fields of social life, including the religion, food, performing arts, material culture, and law. The polyvalence of the word ‘cross’ is explored in the conference. Its various meanings – a metonym for Christianity, adversity and suffering, intersection, hybridity – will serve as conceptual anchors for the different discussions.

Obras Arquitectónicas En Ultramar: Arquitectura Mestiza and the Built Environment in the Philippines

The Boxer Codex Reimagined: A Re-viewing and Re-creating of the Illustrations of Filipinos in the Codex through Digitally Generated Images

Inilunsad noong 29 Abril 2021

The Boxer Codex is a 307-page transcription and translation of an illustrated late 16th century Spanish manuscript also known as the ‘Manila Manuscript’ “concerning the Geography, History, and Ethnography of the Pacific, South-east and East Asia.” It was originally written by a Spaniard and believed to be illustrated by a Chinese artisan working with an Indio. The Philippines is represented in the codex by fifteen (15) illustrations of several types of inhabitants around the country. The project aims to re-visit, re-view, and re-imagine these 15 illustrations of Filipino ‘natives’ documented in the codex through 15 digitally generated images that mirror a new encounter with the past. These will be generated in collaboration with students in the Art Workshop I class, SFA 192 EA Electronic Art Projects I, under the instruction and supervision of Riza A. Romero. The images will be uploaded on a web page to be designed by Riza Romero.

enKWENTrO: Mga Kwento ng Enkwentro (A Public Art Installation Project)

by Prop. Toym Imao

Ilulunsad sa 1 Pebrero | UP Oblation Plaza

View Gallery

“enKWENTrO” is a two-part art installation which consists of “Barikada” which is made of bamboo, repurposed condemned/old campus furniture, components from past installations, particularly coming from “Nagbabadyang Unos” (Gathering Storm) in 2020. Assembled and painted red, they form two towering barricades in the Oblation Plaza, near the actual barricades set up by students in 1971.

“Barikada” is the descended form of “Nagbabadyang Unos,” a suspended artwork that represents the protests and mobilizations that started on the historic steps of Palma Hall in 1970 during the First Quarter Storm and culminated in the siege of the university in 1971 during the Diliman Commune with the barricades that were set up by students and the UP community along the main portals of the campus. Barikada, with its bamboo components and hanging messages and stories embedded in the installation, is also a homage to the artist Jose Luis Yee or Junyee’s art installation “Balag” made of the same materials, and constructed during the year of the First Quarter Storm. That important work is technically the first art installation done in UP Diliman 50 years ago by an artist who is acknowledged as the pioneer of installation art in the Philippines.

“Muebles”, which means either furniture or apparatus, refer to around 50 upcycled class tables, student’s desks, and chairs wherein sculptural relief and in-the-round components are embedded in the furniture to represent narratives from events leading to the Diliman Commune of 1971. These sculptural elements were inspired from actual documented accounts and events during the early years of the Marcos dictatorship. The concept of this collection of specially designed furniture is to represent the classroom as not only a sacred space of learning but also a venue for one’s awakening into the painful histories and realities of a nation. For a period of three days before February 1 (the first day of the Diliman Commune) these muebles will travel from three separate points in the campus – the centers of mobilizations of students: the Palma and Melchor Hall Steps, and the Vinzons Hall Plaza (where the monument of Andres Bonifacio is located). These “travelling” muebles will be documented with photographs and caption stories along the empty roads, street corners, steps, and buildings of the campus and will culminate with their final placement within the “Barikada” installation at the Oblation plaza.
