OICA-Commissioned and Produced Public Art Installations, Musical Compositions, and Other Creative Works

Through the years the UP Diliman Office of the Chancellor through UPD-OICA has supported artistic creation, research, and exploration of various art forms by faculty and student artists through commissioned works and creative grants. Find the partial list of these creative works below.

Song Composition: KILOS ISKOLARWords by Reuel Aguila; Music by Verne Dela Pena; Performed by: UP Arco, UP Madrigal Singers, and Soloist MJ EglosoA hymn written in 2013 as the University's tribute to the victims and survivors of the Yolanda typhoon. The song was also performed by the combined 270 voices of various UP choirs who came together for the benefit concert, Handel's Messiah in December 2013.YouTube

Art Installation: LAYAG: PARANGAL KAY HANS HAACKELeo AbayaThis creative work is part of "Pride of Place/Boldness of Vision", an OICA art installation project for UP Diliman Month 2015.

Leo Abaya’s Layag was exhibited in front of the Oblation. Harnessing natural and artificial wind power to create flow and wave, this site-specific installation alludes to the vigilant and revolutionizing spirit of the University in keeping honor, excellence, and freedom unfurled through the worst and the best of times.
Art Installation: THE GRIDOhm DavidThis creative work is part of "Pride of Place/Boldness of Vision", an OICA art installation project for UP Diliman Month 2015.

Ohm David’s Grid was exhibited at the Academic Oval across the UP Theater. Stepping into The Grid leads one to many different paths, sometimes converging, diverging, more often fragmenting. Others take more time in traversing The Grid, by accident or by choice, while others just breeze through it. In the end, no matter how long and no matter which path one prefers, the journey instills the spirit to explore the possibilities beyond the exits, new opprtunities previously unseen and unknown. This is the very essence of the University as an Institution.
Art Installation: SAN MAZINGER-Z AKA COPING WITH A COUPLE'S COPIOUS CONJUGAL CUPBOARD OF CURIOS, COPS, CUFFS, AND CORPSESToym ImaoThis creative work is part of "Pride of Place/Boldness of Vision", an OICA art installation project for UP Diliman Month 2015.

Toym Imao’s sculptural installation is the second of a three-part "Super Robot-Suffer Reboot Series." Using another religious icon, Michelangelo's Pieta as a take-off point, the artist depicts Inang Bayan carrying a fallen warrior in a Mazinger Z inspired armor
Art Installation: PASSAGELing QuisumbingThis creative work is part of "Pride of Place/Boldness of Vision", an OICA art installation project for UP Diliman Month 2015.

Ling Quisumbing's Passage uses the posts that were once a part of the covered walk of the main library that was demolished. They are reconstructed at the academic oval in the exact proportions and dimensions as they were in their original location. The eight posts stand as markers and monuments of an era when one generation of students after another dreamt of endless possibilities in their youth.

Sansinukob Art Installation: ANG KAHANGINANLeo AbayaThe Sansinukob Art Installation exhibit featured seven visual artists from UP Diliman depicting Philippine stories about the origin of the sansinukob (universe). The exhibit is a glimpse of the ethno-astrology and ancient cosmology of Philippine cultures. The exhibit ran from 1 February to 15 March 2017 and was part of the UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2017

This work by Leo Abaya depicts the Bagobo mythology of Lumabat and his journey to the heavens. The work was exhibited at the CMC Hill.

This work by Anton del Castillo is based on the story "Departure of the Gods" or separation of gods from men by the Kalinga. The work was exhibited at the University Amphitheater and was later transferred to its permanent location in front of the UP Carillon Plaza

This work by Rita Gudino is based on the story of Mebuyan, a multi-breasted Bagobo goddess, mother of the underworld. The work is located at the UP Lagoon.

This work by Junyee and Gerry Leonardo depicts the paradox wherein "Emptiness" is depicted through a large structural fabrication. The work was exhibited across the UP Faculty Center

This work by Leeroy New depicts Agtayabon, the peacemaking God in Mindanaon folklore that is a giant bird with a man's body. The work was exhibited at academic oval in front of the Vargas Museum

This work by Reg Yuson pays homage to Tungkong Langit, a Visayan god and is based on his story "Ang Tahanan ng Manlilikha ng Sansinukob". The work was exhibited at the Academic Oval across the UP Theater.
Lawas Art Installation: PLEIADES 2 (Dakini, Inanna, Kali, Magdalene)Agnes ArellanoPart of UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2018 themed, “Kat(h)awan: Bodies, Culture, Society”, LAWAS is a three-person public art project.

Agnes Arellano’s works center around the themes of Eros and the Sacred Feminine, exressed in sculpture of white plaster, tea-stained cast stone, or bronze. Parts are cast from her body then reassembled to depict figures derived from mythologies

Lawas Art Installation: PUSODMark JustinianiPart of UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2018 themed, “Kat(h)awan: Bodies, Culture, Society”, LAWAS is a three-person public art project.

Mark Justiniani’s Pusod (Navel) is a reflective disc during the day and a marvel of coloured reflections at night. This work belongs to the infinity series and are informed by his longstanding interest in vision and optics, and the structures of space and time.

Lee Paje's Pagpamulak means "to blossom." These are white painted concrete body parts that make a playground. Paje's art addresses issues of gender equality and world views perpetuated by ideologies

Art Installation: NAGBABADYANG UNOS (THE GATHERING STORM)Toym ImaoAng disenyo ni Toym Imao ay bahagi ng UP Diliman Arts and Culture Month 2020. Ito ay batay sa mga naganap na barikada sa UP Campus sa gitna ng Diliman Commune noong 1971. Sa pagkakataon na iyon, ginamit ng komunidad ng UP ang mga silya, lamesa at mga kahoy upang depensahan ang unibersidad sa pagpasok ng mga pulis na nautusang sikilin ang kalayaan ng mga estudayante at guro ng UP. Sa likhang sining na ito, pinorma ang mga silya na nagmula sa mga silid aralan, linuknok sa makasaysayang AS Steps ng Palma Hall bilang espasyo ng moblisasyon at sama-samang pagkilos, at pinorma bilang ulap na magsisimbolo ng paparating na bagyo - isang metapora ng lumalaki at lumalawak na pwersa ng pakikibaka.
Art Installation: ENGWENTRO (BARIKADA at MUEBLES)Toym Imao“enKWENTrO” is part of the UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2021. It is a two-part art installation which consists of “Barikada” which is made of bamboo, repurposed condemned/old campus furniture, components from past installations that represents the protests and mobilizations that culminated in the siege of the university in 1971 during the Diliman Commune with the barricades that were set up by students and the UP community along the main portals of the campus.

“Muebles” which means either furniture or apparatus are made up of around 50 upcycled class tables, student’s desks, chairs where sculptural relief and in the round components are embedded on the chairs that represent narratives from events leading to the Diliman Commune of 1971

“EnKWENTrO” is the 2nd phase of a proposed three year commemoration that started with “Nagbabadyang Unos” in 2020 and “Batas Militar” in 2022 for the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Proclamation 1081 placing the entire Philippines under Martial Law in 1972.
