UP Diliman Month 2015

In celebration of UP Diliman Month 2015, below are the main activities sponsored by the UPD Office of the Chancellor through the UPD Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA).

Diliman Month 2015 was intended to further manifest and articulate the expressed theme of ”Dangal ng Lunan at Tayog ng Haraya”, tapping the creative wellsprings of UP Diliman’s artists, performing groups and athletes in a diverse yet coherent expression of our aspirations and efforts.

Public Art Installations: Pride of Place, Boldness of Vision

Art installations by selected faculty from the UP College of Fine Arts and College of Arts and Letters, highlighting the theme “Pride of Place, Boldness of Vision”.  These artworks will be installed in key public areas of the UP Diliman Campus starting on the first week of February 2015 until the end of the month.

Himigsikan is UPD's traditional open air concert held every Sunday of February at 5 p.m. at the Carillon Plaza.  This year, OICA will be collaborating with other organizations and offices who are also it’s partners and co-advocates in supporting and bringing to the fore UPD’s homegrown musicians and artists. The performances are open to the public for free. 

1 February Carillon Acoustic Sessions

In partnership with the DZUP Radio Circle, featuring Lullaband, MANA Band, Oh, Flamingo and Sheenola. 

8 February Mandolin Duo and Guitar Guild

A string concert featuring the Mandolin Duo of Prof. Lester Demetillo and the Guitar Guild of Prof. Solaiman Jamisolamin, both from the UP College of Music.

15 February Harana sa Carillon

A mini-concert of love songs by the student choirs of the Colleges of Engineering, Mass Communication, Science, Social Sciences and Philosophy and AIT, in partnership with the OVCSA.  

22 February Jazz on a Sunday 

Vibrant jazz performances by the UP Jazz Ensemble led by musical director and conductor Prof. Rayben Maigue.

1 March Kabataang Makabayan, Paglingkuran ang Sambayanan!

Musical performances celebrating the 45th anniversary of the historical First Quarter Storm and the 50th anniversary of Kabataang Makabayan, presented by Tatak KM.

ELEVISION: UP Pep Squad Concert

A concert of the UP Pep Squad, the project aims to present, through dance, the UP Pep’s cheerdance competition theme:  Pantay-pantay / gender equality and aims to showcase the talents of the different choreographers, coaches, dancers and drummers of the squad.  As corollary to the event, a competition among cheerdance groups from within and outside UP will be held on February 23 at the CHK Gym.

The long-awaited back-to-back concert of the two of the country’s prestigious universities. The event aims to promote academic collegiality and camaraderie through joint endeavors in music. 

Mario V.A. Parial: Beyond Reality: A Retrospective Exhibition

Organized by the UP Theater Complex, the exhibit features a collection of works by the late Mario VA Parial, a celebrated and multi-awarded painter, sculptor, printmaker, and photographer. He taught printmaking and painting in the 1990s at the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

Bagwis 2: Birds of UP Diliman and Quezon City

As with the first installment exhibited last year, Bagwis 2 continues to promote  "Pride of Place" as it aims to raise awareness and appreciation for the rich, natural heritage of UP Diliman through the exhibition of beautiful photographs of its avian treasures. This year includes the Quezon City environs, especially its known "Avian Corridor" which is the La Mesa Eco Park. Known bird photographers Prof. Reuel Aguila, Prof. Bert Madrigal (who also teaches Bird Watching class in CHK), and Prof. Armando Somintac are co-curators. Other activities may include actual bird watching activities and lectures on conservation.

The exhibit features a collection of city and campus plans, historical photographs of landmarks and urban settings that characterize the rich and shared heritage of Quezon City and the UP Diliman Campus.  The exhibit is curated by heritage architect, Gerard Rey Lico. 

Class Menu Revisited: UP Dance Company Concert

The dance concert showcasing the vibrant UP Dance Company in diverse genres of dance, from classical ballet, neo-classical, folk, to contemporary.  This offers a rich repertoire resonant of both the range and depth of the substantive curriculum of UP Diliman’s dance program under the College of Music.

Thirteen (13) of UP Diliman's acclaimed and multi-awarded official performing groups come together for an evening of world class music, dance, and theater performances. This is also a special thanksgiving concert to celebrate the efforts and triumphs of our performing groups and other UPD organizations and units in building bridges and enabling communities.

To open the Diliman Month, a short but lively parade around the Academic Oval will be led by the UP CHK Varsity Teams and the UPD Official Performing Groups to highlight and celebrate last year's victories and achievements in various sports, the performing arts and to catalyze support for the rest of the season. The parade will end at the Oblation Plaza in time for the participants to attend the regular flag raising ceremony.
