Venue Development Program

OICA’s support for the various student- and faculty-led activities in theater, music, cinema, visual arts, and other similar arenas does not only serve to enrich the artistic and cultural experiences of the UP Diliman audience but also helps to promote the UPD campus as a veritable cultural venue where artists’ works are staged and fostered.

Strategies/Programs:

1. Financial Grants Program

Financial assistance is given to UPD units and organizations for projects and programs relating to the broad field of culture and arts. These projects include venue development initiatives. Grants take the form of partial subsidy and shall not exceed the total project cost.

2. Venue Creation, Development, and Maintenance

As part of its mandate, OICA likewise coordinates the creation, development, and maintenance of venues such as galleries, museums, archives, auditoriums, and theaters at UPD for exhibitions, performances, and research (such as the Bulwagan ng Dangal).

3. Maintenance and Restoration of Public Art

Restoration projects spearheaded by OICA include: the Manansala painting at Palma Hall, Joya painting at the College of Home Economics, the Carillon, the Bonifacio Sculpture at Vinzons, and the Tribute to Higher Education public art along the University Avenue.




Audience Development Program

This program promotes the cultivation of critical education and appreciation of culture and the arts among members of the public on campus and beyond UPD. It complements the existing curricula of various UPD colleges as well as the cultural programs of government and non-government organizations.

2. Bisita Kultura

Presentations by established, as well as budding UPD artistic groups from various fields as dance, theater, instrumental and voice music regularly take place amid gatherings of students, faculty, staff, residents and visitors during the Christmas season and twice a year in selected dormitories. Halls of buildings and dormitories on campus serve as venues for groups that regularly grace this event such as: the UP Madrigal Singers, UP Concert Chorus, UP Singing Ambassadors, UP Staff Choral, Entwined Voices, Saxophoro, Symphony Orchestra, Guitar Orchestra, UP Kontra-Gapi, UP Filipiniana Dance Group, UP Streetdance Club, and the UP Teatrong Mulat, among many others. The last Bisita Kultura (sa Pasko) was held in December 2008. (STATUS: CURRENTLY SUSPENDED)

3. Other OICA-initiated productions/activities

Performances, exhibitions, lectures, and other cultural activities produced by OICA are free and open to the public.




Artist Support Program

This program nourishes the creative energies of UP Diliman artists, critics, and cultural workers.

2. UP Diliman Honorific Award for Student Performing Arts Group (UPD HASPAG)

This is an incentive program where qualified UPD student performing arts groups are appointed as Official Student Performing Arts Group of UP Diliman for a period of three years. During this period, each group receives an annual monetary grant of P250,000 to be used for special projects and productions.

3. UP Diliman Performing Arts Scholarship Program (UPD PASP)

This is a scholarship in form of a tuition waiver or stipend (for those covered by the free tuition policy) awarded to deserving student-performers who are members of an Official Student Performing Arts Group of UP Diliman. It is also an honorific award with the title UPD Performing Arts Scholar.

4. UP Diliman Visual Arts and Cultural Studies Scholarship Program (UPD VACSSP)

This award is in the form of a tuition waiver or stipend (for those covered by the free tuition policy) awarded to deserving students in the visual arts and in programs related to arts and cultural critiques/studies.

5. UP Diliman Creative Critical Thesis Grant in the Arts, Culture, and the Humanities (UPD CCTGACH)

This is a competitive thesis grant for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral UPD students in the following disciplines, but not limited to: painting, sculpture, visual communication, industrial design, architecture, landscape architecture, heritage studies, theatre studies, art studies, comparative literature, area studies, Philippine studies, anthropology, cultural studies, Asian studies, clothing technology, interior design, tourism, and language studies.

The thesis grant is a financial subsidy amounting to P50,000 for undergraduate, P75,000 for master’s and P100,000 for doctoral students. The grant is envisioned to defray some of the student’s expenses in conducting research or producing creative work.

Programs

To advance UPD to the forefront of artistic and cultural engagement in the Philippines, OICA has created four key programs to systematize and enrich the University’s artistic and cultural endeavors. These programs are: Artist Support, Audience Development, Venue Development and Cultural Exchange. Under these programs, various artists and artistic groups, as well as artistic and cultural initiatives from units and organizations at UPD are given financial and technical assistance. OICA likewise supports mutually enriching partnerships with the UP autonomous units and other cultural institutions through collaborative projects such as conferences, workshops, performances, and other forms of dissemination. OICA has also proactively developed and implemented its own projects to further enhance the initiatives from various sectors of the University.
