BAGWIS: The Birds of UP Diliman

When

September 17, 2013 - October 17, 2013

“BAGWIS: Birds of UP Diliman” was a photo exhibition of UP Diliman’s avian treasures which aimed to promote awareness, appreciation, conservation, and pride of place.

Bagwis featured vivid photographs of bird species found in UP Diliman, most of which were taken by UP Diliman photographers (faculty, staff, and alumni). It also showcased bird sound recordings in an interactive feature done by Prof. Maria Christine Muyco (UP College of Music) titled “Pispis(an).” Here, bird sound recordings can be arranged to create/compose sounds of an “aviary world.”

The exhibit was curated by bird watcher, photographer, writer and UP faculty Prof. Reuel M. Aguila. Other contributing photographers are Prof. Armando Somintac (NIP), Prof. Norberto Madrigal (CHK), Prof. Agerico de Villa (Philosophy), Mr. Adrian Constantino, Mr. Neon Rosell II, Mr. Ven Rojas, Mr. Rey Sta. Ana, Mr. Alain Pascua and Dr. William Lim.

According to Prof. de Villa, there are a total of 113 species of birds observed within the UP Campus in Diliman. 109 of these species are endemic, resident, and migratory, while 4 are introduced and escapees.  Among the endemic species are the Spotted Wood Kingfisher, Philippine Coucal, Lowland White-eye, Red-Keeled Flowerpecker, Pygmy Flowerpecker, Plain Bush-hen, Chocolate Boobook, Philippine Scops Owl, Philippine Eagle Owl, Philippine Serpent Eagle, Colasisi, Guaiabero, White-throated Kingfisher, Philippine Drongo Cuckoo, Philippine Hawk Cuckoo, White-eared Brown Dove, Yellow-breasted Fruit Dove, Black-Chinned Fruit Dove, Philippine Reddish Cuckoo Dove, Philippine Pygmy Woodpecker, Ashy Ground Thrush, and the Lemon-throated Leaf Warbler.

The Bagwis Exhibit is part of a series of cultural and artistic projects which carry the “Pride of Place” theme.
